Here at Platform, we love to hear your Shared Ownership stories—whether you're taking your first steps on the property ladder or moving on to your dream home.
Recently, we helped Ethan, an Army veteran, and his wife, Karren find their perfect new home via shared ownership.
After leaving a career in the military, which also meant leaving their home on a military estate, Ethan and his family were looking for something new - something which shared ownership made possible.
When Ethan left his career in the military, which also came with a home on a dedicated estate, he and his family suddenly found themselves looking for something new.
It wasn't long after this that Ethan found a new job in Gloucester, alongside a property in a beautiful area, but, like many people in today’s market, he was struggling to raise enough money for the deposit.
It was at this point that Ethan and his family discovered shared ownership.
Shared ownership is ideal for buyers who don’t have the savings for a deposit, since you’ll generally only need 5% - 10% of the share amount, rather than the full market value.
On a property worth £250,000, a 5% deposit on a 25% share would be as little as £3,125, as opposed to £12,500 for the full market value.
From Ethan’s perspective, he suddenly had the opportunity to buy in an area he truly loved. We sat down with Ethan to get an idea of how the process played out:
