Bright Ideas: Maximising Natural Light This Autumn

Autumn’s here, bringing with it cosy vibes and early sunsets. But as the days get shorter, how do you maximise precious natural light in your home? Our resident expert, Rebecca Jones from  Edward Thomas Interiors shares five top tips…

1. Window Dressings

Your likely starting point will be to focus on natural light sources, so windows, skylights and French or bi-fold doors. To create the warm, hygge feel that characterises Autumn, opt for full floor to ceiling curtains. These can be in any fabric; voiles are great for privacy and creating soft light, whereas a weightier option with a woven texture, or velvet, can make an inviting statement. Either way, my advice is to make sure they are fitted properly so they sit right at the edge of the window reveal, allowing maximum light inside.

If your preference is for a blind, then Romans are a great option, particularly for tight or confined spaces. Again, make sure these are fitted flush to the ceiling so that when open, they maintain the most light. Finally, it’s also worth mentioning that café style curtains are having a moment, especially on TikTok. These offer the best of both options and half cover the window, which works well in kitchens, bathrooms and playrooms.

2. Reflect, Reflect, Reflect!

In smaller homes or apartments, the trick is to bounce light around the room. Position mirrors on the opposite wall to the window to maximise brightness. If you have alcoves or nooks with space for a tall lamp, add a mirror behind this and it will reflect the layered lighting back. Don’t forget your windowsills too. Those free of clutter will let light come into the room. That's not to say you can't have your favourite vase full of flowers to bring you joy!

3. Wall Treatments

Adding statement wall treatments or repainting is a great option for brightening a room. A light paint colour will instantly make a room feel bigger and lighter, as will half height panelling, especially if you paint a light colour on the bottom and a darker shade on top. Typically, paint with a satin finish will reflect more light than a matt version.

When it comes to wallpapers, the same applies, matt options absorb light so work well for creating an elegant aesthetic e.g. with a natural leaf motif. If your tastes are bolder, then a metallic wallpaper positioned opposite the window will reflect the light and give the room a luxurious feel.

4. Furniture Placement

It seems an obvious thing to say but think about your room layout and arrange your furniture around the natural light source. So for example, keep larger pieces like wardrobes, bookcases and chests of drawers away from windows; they will absorb light and create unwanted shadows. In bedrooms, position the bed facing the window so you see natural light first thing in the morning and ensure you start the day in the healthiest mood!

5. Alternative Lighting

When daylight fades and you want to maintain a light and bright feel, my advice is to layer your lighting. This technique is all about creating comfortable, inviting yet functional spaces and is achieved by mixing your light sources. So everything from table lamps and floor lamps to wall lights, candles and open fires. In every living space, I recommend some combination of these so you can shift the vibe according to your activity and keep your home feeling refreshed and uplifted.
