Spring is here, marking the perfect time to breathe new life into your home interiors. We spoke to our resident interior design expert, Rebecca Jones from Edward Thomas Interiors for her spring styling tips and where to start with refreshing your home for the season…
What trends are popular this spring?
The warm, ‘lived in’ look is really in right now. So rooms that look welcoming and packed with personality but without trying too hard. Think layered textures alongside curved forms and accessories, old furniture mixed with new, plus photos, books and artwork that are meaningful to you. Heritage-inspired detailing, like panelling, is also still current, especially when paired with rich wood tones and layered lighting.
As the warmer weather arrives, what’s your advice for creating indoor/outdoor spaces?
Around windows and French doors, swap curtains for soft voiles to keep the light and visibility to the garden free flowing. Add visual interest to these areas with nature-inspired textures such as rugs, feature wallpaper or artwork. Plants can also bring much joy and a layer of interest to help soften that hard indoor-outdoor barrier. Finally, focus on earthy tones such as rich ochre, sage green and terracotta to create a more natural feel that blends with furniture.
You mention earthy tones, what other colours can we use for spring styling?
Anything that reflects what’s happening outside; light, soft and warm tones. Nothing high contrast, just soothing shades that are easy to live with and deliver an uplifting feel! Grounding green is so popular it's almost becoming a neutral. Then the classic yellow has been given a new spin with the lemon, butter and straw tones appearing in accessories and paint shades. Pair these with a base of Cloud Dancer, the Pantone Colour of the Year, for a playful interior that can be easily revamped or uplifted when you inevitably see other accessories you love!
What’s your advice for spring styling on a budget?
A fresh scent is always a winner. In transitional spaces such as hallways and landings, add diffusers with spring scents. Of course, fresh cut flowers are popular too but don’t buy a full bouquet, opt for single stems instead. These are really having their moment. Place single stem tulips or ranunculus in bud vases or empty glass bottles in thoughtful positions around the home and it’ll give an instant fresh feel.
Otherwise, swap out heavier textures such as velvets for cottons or linens, switch accessories between rooms, and replace lightbulbs from soft to warm white for an energy boost.
A good spring clean is always on the list for this time of year. Where should homeowners start with interior decluttering?
Places you see instantly, like the entrance hall. Keep these clutter-free and organised; this will make your space feel welcoming and not overwhelming. Then move onto the spaces you use and see every day, like the dining table, desk, kitchen worksurfaces, and bedroom furniture. Keeping these clean and tidy can help life feel more manageable and less stressful. Starting small and tackling things little and often turns a seemingly large task into easy wins.
