There’s no arguing that smart tech is well embedded in our daily lives, from hidden charging points and USB sockets to remotely controlled lighting, heating and sound. These technologies add a new layer of personalisation to the home. But how do you integrate them seamlessly with your interior styling? We asked our resident expert, Rebecca Jones from Edward Thomas Interiors for her advice…

Which is the best room to put smart speakers?

Smart speakers produce the best sound when they are elevated, away from other noisy appliances and not tucked away in a corner. Kitchen/diners are one of the most popular rooms as they are the hub of the home and the main entertaining space. Listening to music, podcasts or recipes here can be a shared experience and make the room feel even more inviting

How can I introduce smart lighting in my home?

Minimalist lighting is very on trend right now; you want to ensure any lights you have are intentional. LED strip lights are one of our favourite options for adding accent lighting such as under breakfast bars, shelving or cabinets. These create a sleek finish, can be configured with warm or cool settings to suit different tasks, and you can pick them up easily from Amazon or other home retailers!

What about home security and heating sensors? Where should they go to remain subtle?

Try to find a system with panels or sensors with a strong design that could easily merge with your existing décor. So for example, Hive or Nest thermostats are available with a chrome or mirrored finish, meaning they wouldn’t look out of place next to chrome sockets. If this isn’t an option, you can paint or colour sensors the same as your wallcoverings to keep them hidden.

How else could I camouflage smart tech?

Many smart brands offer devices with timeless finishes e.g. white, black or wood tones, meaning they are easy to blend with existing furniture. You can also get some really clever smart tech designs such as TVs that look like framed mirrors or artwork when on standby or switched off. Simpler options include fabric sleeves for smart speakers and decorative boxes or plant covers for cameras or control panels.

In the kitchen, how can I incorporate bulkier appliances like air fryers & slow cookers?

If you want to maintain a clean aesthetic, remember appliances don’t have to live on worktops, they can be put away and brought out as necessary. Some appliances have wall-mounting capabilities, or you could incorporate layers of shelving as storage. If you do use more frequently, dedicate a corner or less-trafficked area so it doesn’t interfere with prep space.
